However, if a total solution to fossil fuel reliance somehow did present itself, how responsible would mankind be with it?
That is the more important issue.
I agree. Nuclear fusion is a very powerful way to get reliable, cheap energy. Solar in space is probably easier to launch (pardon the pun) than our current state of Nuclear efficiencies (far too much energy and mass are wasted). Our best hope is the Chinese “Little Sun” Nuclear Fusion Reactor series. We have far more potential in nuclear fusion, but I fear we will need the solar sustenance to keep our society moving until we make that Nuclear breakthrough.

And there is enough resources in space to pay for all of this. Mining one metallic asteroid and selling the rare earth metals should pretty much cover it.

ok put solar panels in space, then u gotta think how u gona get the energy from the panels to earth, i dont think there gona run cables from them do you, there is other efficiant ways of clean energy out there.
Ignoring the science issues, the problem with alternative energy solutions comes down to control and what I call the paradise paradox. Let us suppose that President Obama achieved everything he says he wants to achieve for the US - less dependency on foreign oil, and increased alternative energy sources FOR THE USA. What about Mexico ? There economy is based on oil, which is depleting. I expect huge waves of migration unto the USA, negating the benefits for alt. energy solutions.
I am 100% against the use of fossil fuels and other non-sustainable sources of energy, but there are other, superior facts that that your analysis overlooks. 800 TW of solar fall every year, over 50 times our current annual consumption, there is simply no need to go into space for solar power.
