Should i block off my chimney for putting in an electric fire?

We currently have an open fire and we have just excavated the space to make it bigger for a wood burning stove. We can’t afford that at the moment though so were wanting to put an electric stove (looks like wood burner) in the open space into the fireplace. However i don’t want all the heat going up the chimney. Also we live in a stair so the chimney is shared with 6 other houses so not sure what to do about the top of the chimney as most advice says you need to cap the top as well.
Any suggestions?

  1. alvarz says:

you must be in the U K. Well it’s obvious that U cannot block off the top of the chimney. And even if you want to just block off your portion it may cause a problem for everyone else. So why do you not consult a chimney expert? A person who builds chimneys. In the U K there are people like that.
Here in the States we just have mostly Salesmen who read a brochure once and awhile,,and dont know thier ass from a hole in the ground.
