If you use it a lot I would go up on the roof every month or so and see how dirty it is. You can buy rods and a brush at most hardware stores or even online. Avoid using those plastic brushes as they don't hold up as well as a steel bristle brush. You will also want to know how tall your chimney is when you go to buy a brush.
