Your new fire place door is going to be bigger than your fire place opening. You will need room to put insulation on the inside frame of the new fireplace where it extends over the wall. The whole thing clamps to the inside of the fireplace on mine with real easy to use clamps. They can look very elegant. The bar removal I haven't had to do.

I had a similar set up but instead of a door, there was a solid piece of glass between the screen (as youd described) and the glass. Ours was a Heatilator and on their units, you could read the model number behind the access panel on the bottom of the unit. Based on that model number, they had a
2 panel door that I ordered. It came with detailed instructions on installing it.

Depending on your unit, you might have the same vendor, if not maybe you can get the model number and then search for the door.
