Until the cost of solar energy drops to the point where it is economically viable to choose it over power from the grid, solar power will remain unusual. The problem is that for solar power, you need to committ large amounts of money during the building phase. Tens of thousands of additional dollars, and space for expensive batteries that have a limited lifetime. What is truly needed is advances in battery technology. Unfortunately chemistry is fairly well understood, and there don’t seem to be any useful candidates for really efficient and cheap batteries.
As for numbers, the definition of solar is vague: there are active, passibe, and combination systems. And the degree to which house can supply power also varies quite a bit.
Sadly not much.. if you live any where near the western cost you will know what I mean.. Clouds! the same can be said a bout the north and eastern cost with those long cloudy winters! the best places would be in the south west (where there aren’t as much people there) cause water is an issue when you want to put a lot of people in places desert or near desert conditions. but hay, clear skies! So you see, it isn’t that useful the US in most of the year round. You might argue though that we could put them any way to use them when we can? Economically that isn’t efficient yet due to the high cost of doing so? but it might happen if the price of electricity would go higher than the cost of solar energy “when aplicable”? How about wend power?!
