How do you remove the “unseen” part of the chimney?

I have no plans to remove the chimney on the roof. However, to free up a 3 foot square going down the center of our house, we would like to remove the cinder block part of the chimney. Any suggestions?

Be careful and take a sledge hammer and break it apart. If it is properly installed it will crumble. Be careful since if it was not done correctly the top portion may fall in. I done this type of this several times before, and I’ve had it happen both ways. Its a messy job, but worth it in the long run.

Not clear.. Do you want to enlarge ONE room by 3 sq ft? If so… that would require some tearing out of existing wall board…. taking out the brick and re-wall boarding..

Are you sure this is what you want to do? Many people buying houses (in case you were to sell it) want a fire place.. and seeing the chimney on top would anticipate that it had a fireplace on the inside

it would be best to remove the entire chimney. it will fall in unless you find a way to support the weigh from the bottom and if you are trying to gain space it’s not feasible to support it.
