Joe just use thin kidlen, a few sheets of newspaper and a match and your good to go. The time it took you to turn that one on. I would of been done turning on mine and finish watching a movie.
Since he’s been doing this for, well, longer than both of our years combined, I’d say he knows what he’s doing.
Besides, that looks like an old cast-iron stove, those were made back in the days when an entire house was a match waiting to go off. Not up to modern standards? Hardly. But that doesn’t mean anything is ‘wrong’.
THanks JOe!
Just watching that wood stove warmed my bones!
are you nuts??!! You take your pipes apart evry month? Your the first person I have ever heard of that does that, I never heard of that before…really?
Yup,soot collects on the inside of it and if there are any sections that are horizontal it could be half clogged. I just stand them up in a bucket and knock the side of them. I usualy take my pipes apart every month just for saftey. Be sure to use screws to hold the pipes togther and if they dont have any use self tapping screws,2-3 per connection.
Wow! Thanks, I wouldnt have known that, you mean take apart that long black pipe that diverts the smoke outside?
I had a Chimney sweep come out 4 years ago and after he cleaned it I never used it again, would he have picked up (or pointed out) what you just pointed out to me?
and also before using your wood stove check you stove pipes for rust holes or lose screws,it would be best to take it apart and clean it. Some pipe becomes brittle after a few years.
OK there are a few safety hassards in this video. The saftey mat isnt big enough under the stove. Theres a rug almost under the stove, not good. The stove is to close to the wall and theres paper and stuff haging on the wall that could get hot enough to ignite. The couch is way to close. To realy help regulate you heat you should have a damper in the outlet.open the damper any time you open the door to prevent smoke from backing up.
I’m glad I could help.
Thank you ChiefWiggim! I appreciate your help, we had our first fire in 4 years because we were sorta nervous about it, your a grea help, bless you!
add in more and once the stove is hot then you can close the stove pipe damper all the way and you will get alot of heat!! For over night fires best to use unsplit pieces and push all the coals toward the back so it will burn slower, startes burning from one end to the other side.
I always start mine with newspaper, open up the paper then crunch it up into a ball and throw it in,use around 5 sheets of paper. Then take some scrap wood like around (6-8)8″-1 foot long pieces(cedar is the best)and lean it together like a TeePee over the paper. Open the damper if you have one on the stove pipe and lite the fire, oce lit close the door and be sure the air inlet is open. Ones the fire is going good then add a small piece of hard wood to the fire, then a ocne that is going well..
I have bought 5 cord of wood at $160 a cord this year,If I were to burn oil it would be a tank a month(250 gallons). Wood is alot cheaper!!
Make sure your chimney is clean, there may be a nest or debree blocking the outlet. Best to clean twice a month with a chimney brush to prevent chimney fires.
This is helpful gonna buy one. Who knows with the economy we may need to go back to these things again. Thanks
Wow! Im so thankful you replied because we really need to save money this year and I thought there was something wrong with our woodstove, been too scared to start a fire.
How does one start a COLD fire? lol I wouldnt know how to start a fire any other way then a HOT one. I did see you use that long torch thing, where would I get one of those? To start a SMALL fire is how many logs? Maybe a handful of twigs and a single log?
Wish you were here with me lol
Smoke filling the room is a common occurance when the chimney is cold. it is important to start a small HOT fire, get the chimney warm, which in turn starts a “draft” or “draw” going up and out. Always keep a window fan handy. Watch this video again and I hope it helps.
We have a woodstove and twice we had the smoke start filling the room, what the heck did we do wrong? lol We are afraid to use it because we dont know what causes it
Thanks for the tips Joe ! (gotta love the oldtimers)
You only have to do it if the stove is cold… once a month… newspapers create dangerous embers which can catch the roof on fire.
whats with the torch?
