I have a
wood stove
in the garage getting hooked up this week. It has the fire bricks on the sides and on the bottom. Should I get a grate or something to keep the fire off the flat bottom to get more air?

Yes you need a grate. I am not sure why, but I remember my parents having to buy them for our wood stove when I was small.
If it’s the kind with an opening front door or window.
A grate will allow better air-flow to get under the wood.
