How do I tell if my chimney needs to be cleaned?

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

I bought a 20 year old house about 3 years ago. I haven’t really used the fireplace, because I don’t know if the chimney is clean. You cannot look down it from the roof because there’s a cap on it, and you cannot see past the flu from inside. Any ideas?

How can I tell if my chimney flue is shut?

Would the arm, to open and close it, point out-ward or in-ward (toward the chimney wall)? We just bought this house and are clueless.

Should i block off my chimney for putting in an electric fire?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

We currently have an open fire and we have just excavated the space to make it bigger for a wood burning stove. We can’t afford that at the moment though so were wanting to put an electric stove (looks like wood burner) in the open space into the fireplace. However i don’t want all the heat going up the chimney. Also we live in a stair so the chimney is shared with 6 other houses so not sure what to do about the top of the chimney as most advice says you need to cap the top as well.
Any suggestions?

How do you remove a raccoon from a chimney without harming it or it’s young?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

A raccoon has taken up residence in my chimney and I believe she has recently had a litter of young in the past week. I was planning on just smoking out the varmint by dropping small pieces of burning paper down the chimney, but now that she has young, I’m afraid she will abandon them if I were to do this. If she were to abandon her young, I’d be worried that the babies would starve to death, and dead baby varmints may produce an unwanted aroma, not to mention a more messy problem.
Any ideas?

How do you remove the “unseen” part of the chimney?

Monday, March 30th, 2009

I have no plans to remove the chimney on the roof. However, to free up a 3 foot square going down the center of our house, we would like to remove the cinder block part of the chimney. Any suggestions?
